How to Select and Set Circuit Breakers for Generators
Generators differ from other electrical power sources in their ability to withstand electrical overloads and fault currents. These differences should be respected when selecting and setting circuit breakers which protect generators.
Terasaki have prepared a designed guide that explains the parameters of generators and circuit breakers which should be considered when selecting and setting circuit breakers which protect generators.

This facility allows the ACB to be remotely operated locally.
The air circuit breaker is fitted with a removable umbilical connection that allows the operation of the circuit breaker from a safe area/distance.
Low voltage air circuit breakers (ACB) until recently have always been operated by personnel standing in front to the switchboard and using the mechanical push buttons located on the front of the ACB. In the event of an arc flash hazard event occurring this is a very dangerous place for the operator to be.
There are two solutions to this problem, one is for the operator to wear correct category PPE. Category 4 arc flash protection suit, depending on the energy levels present may not provide full protection. The other safer solution is to remove the operator from the dangerous area in front of the switchboard.
Terasaki have designed within the circuit breaker an umbilical connection socket which allows for a push button circuit breaker operation unit to be located at or outside the switch room door which can then be easily connected to the circuit breaker to be operated via an umbilical cable. Facility moves the operator from the dangerous location in front of the switchboard to a safe area. It also alleviates the need to run costly installation cables from a remote location to the switchboard.
A circuit breaker can either be supplied new or retrofitted into existing Terasaki circuit breakers.
Terasaki and Socomec Sicon hosted a Conference on the Future of Electrical Protection & Monitoring at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Thursday 6th February.
The conference provided an important forum for exchange between facility managers, industry professionals and academics, tackling the most critical global energy issues for our businesses. Dr. Catalina Sparatu from the Energy Institute at the University College London was the guest speaker and hosted a presentation on the Dynamic Simulation of Energy Systems.
Despite the Conference being held during the Tube Strike 50 delegates attended on the day and the event was judged to be a resounding success.
Obtaining spares for obsolete circuit breakers can prove to be impossible and replacing an entire switchboard can have a serious impact on production downtime and budget constraints.
Retrofitting a modern low voltage air circuit breaker has been proven to be a cost and time effective solution to this growing dilemma. Read more about retrofitting ACBs in the article “Design And Retrofitting Of Low Voltage Air Circuit Breakers” on our ACBs page.
Over the past few decades the low voltage installation has become increasingly more challenging for Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs). Increased fault levels, higher harmonics levels, changing legislation and demand for maximum uptime have substantially altered the requirements of this important protective device.
Our “Safe Switchgear Specification” Paper will update the professional electrical engineer on the safe application of low voltage MCCB technology and will examine thoroughly protection disciplines, isolation principles and future trends for MCCBs
The “Application of Circuit Breakers to Reduce Downtime in Datacentres” paper will describe circuit breaker selection methods and available circuit breaker technology which can contribute to reduced downtime in datacentres. It is divided into issues related to topology (or system layout) and sustainability (performance over time).
Find both articles on the MCCBs application notes’ page.
Amtech users now have the opportunity to design a complete protection system using Terasaki devices. Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs), Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) covering 1A to 6300A ratings are included in the 2013 release.
Terasaki’s panelboard and distribution board ranges have been upgraded to include new TemBreak 2 Lite MCCBs and TD3 MCBs. Discrimination and cascade co-ordination between these devices is included in the software. Cascade protection of up to 40kA between MCCBs and MCBs has been proven by test.
Protection settings can even be uploaded and downloaded through the data link. This means that the settings can respond dynamically to changes in the electrical network (for example if the mains fails and the supply comes from a back-up generator). All the necessary protection relay models are included in Amtech software.
We also offer CIBSE CPD endorsed courses which have been used to train over 500 engineers in subjects such as discrimination and circuit breaker specifications. If you need training that is focused on learning, not selling, these concise courses are ideal.
Terasaki has published a new UK price list as a spreadsheet and as an indexed, searchable pdf file. It includes 220 pages of order codes and prices for circuit breakers, contactors, distribution boards and power factor correction. It is available to download from the website Download section.
A new version of up to date Order Codes List is also available on our Downloads page for our distributors.
Terasaki has extended the range of the popular TemBreak 2 MCCB range. New models have been developed from 800A to 1600A.
The 1000A model is be the same frame size as Terasaki’s existing XS800 (height = 273mm, width = 210mm, depth = 103mm). This is considerably smaller than most of Terasaki’s competitors who offer a 1600A frame device to protect 1000A circuits. Market prices of the new 1000A models are more competitive than the previous XS1250-CE / 1000A.
125kA and 200kA breakers in 800A frame are now available in the new range. Terasaki have recently won two large projects for Telehouse data centres by offering plug-in versions of the new 800A frame models.
The new MCCBs all feature from direct opening action to IEC 60947-5-1. This is a safety feature which is important for isolating machinery and is indicated by the direct opening action symbol on the nameplate. Only breakers made by Terasaki currently carry this safety mark.
Users can now benefit from the common design of TemBreak 2 MCCBs from 20A to 1600A. Shunt trips, auxiliary switches and alarm switches are exactly the same throughout the range and are easy to install in the field.
Terasaki’s two-dial electronic overcurrent relay also has the same design throughout the range, covering ratings from 20A to 1600A.

Terasaki
and Mardix Pass Test at One Hundred Thousand Amps
Terasaki
and Mardix are delighted to announce the success of
their joint switchgear testing program. Engineers at
Mardix have designed a new industry-leading, high-capacity
distribution switchgear system incorporating Terasaki
circuit breakers. Intended for use in buildings with
high, concentrated electrical energy demand such as
data centres and banks, it has now been proven to withstand
short-circuit fault current of up to one hundred thousand
amps (100kA).
Peace
of Mind from Independent Testing and Certification to
IEC 61439
The
consequences of switchgear failure when a business depends
heavily on the availability of electricity could be
disastrous. Terasaki and Mardix had the system independently
tested and certified to give users and specifiers peace
of mind about the performance of the equipment.
Short-circuit
performance at 100kA was tested at the ASTA-approved
DAMSTRA laboratory in the Netherlands.
Temperature
performance was verified at kA Testing in the UK (also
ASTA-certified). This highlighted the superior thermal
performance of the switchboard and circuit breakers
in that:
•
a rating of 6300A for the incoming circuit (a TemPower
2 ACB) was achieved with natural cooling;
• Outgoing circuits
rated from 160A to 3200A (TemBreak 2 MCCBs and TemPower
2 ACBs) achieved a diversity factor of 1
with natural cooling.
Latest
Switchgear Standard
The
system was designed and tested to the latest standard
for low-voltage switchgear assemblies, IEC 61439. ASTA
certificates are available and reference the new standard.
Collaboration
Offers Choice to Clients
Terasaki
and Mardix are independent companies, successful in
their separate, but overlapping business areas. Terasaki
are the UK’s foremost circuit breaker specialists,
supplying components to switchboard builders for a
wide range of commercial, industrial and marine projects.
Mardix deliver an integrated solution for every aspect
of the critical power life cycle through switchgear,
power management and service.
The co-operation between Terasaki and Mardix offers
choice to clients who like to select the best technical
solution for a project without being restricted to
using the same brand for systems and circuit breakers
due to existing certification. Some examples of the
benefits of this “best of breed” approach
are:
• Reduction in
space required for switchgear in the building. 100kA
short-circuit withstand ratings can achieved in 1400mm
wide incoming switchgear compartments. This is possible
only due to the unique combination of Air Circuit
Breakers
with exceptional ratings (Terasaki) and busbar design
(Mardix) and can result in space savings of up to
40% over
conventional designs.
• Overheating
is the single most common cause of failure in switchgear.
Full critical power monitoring systems, incorporating
real-time, continuous thermal measurement of circuit
breakers is an easily achieved option with this combination
of equipment.

Moulded
Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) - TemBreak2
One
of the most powerful features of the TemBreak2 MCCB
is that it is so easy to install and operate - it was
designed that way.
TemBreak2 MCCBs are now available with high tech integrated
LCD energy monitor which can be connected to an Automatic
Monitoring and Targeting system.
The
TemPower 2 ACB is extremely reliable in service.
All models in the range have a short-time withstand
rating equal to their service breaking capacity. This
guarantees total discrimination without further calculation
because it allows short-circuit protection to be time-delayed
even at the maximum prospective short-circuit current.
